Scope
GB/T 42933-2023 is the English-translated version of 多式联运运载单元标识.
China's national standard for the identification of intermodal loading units. A loading unit is the box the goods travel in - a container, a swap body, a semi-trailer - and its identification is what the whole intermodal system tracks. The requirement is not merely a serial number: the marking has to be readable by a person at a distance and in poor light, by a camera at a terminal gate as a vehicle passes at speed, and increasingly by radio, and it has to encode enough to identify the unit uniquely worldwide and to say what it is - its type, its dimensions and its ratings. That is why the international container marking system encodes the owner, the equipment category, the serial and a check digit, with a separate size and type code, and why anything used domestically alongside it has to fit the same scheme rather than compete with it.
