Scope
GB/T 42433-2023 is the English-translated version of 珠宝玉石鉴定 红外光谱法.
GB/T 42433-2023 is the Chinese national method for identifying gems and jades by infrared spectroscopy.
It covers the method principle, the instruments and equipment, the samples, the choice of spectrum collection method - potassium bromide pellet transmission, direct transmission through the sample, specular reflection and attenuated total reflection - the test steps worked through on a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, the processing of the spectra, the main influencing factors and the test report.
Clause 1 limits it to gem materials that show characteristic absorption between the mid-infrared and the near-infrared. Its informative Appendix A runs to some eighty spectra with brief notes, from diamond, corundum, beryl, tourmaline, spinel and topaz to nephrite, amber, glass, synthetic cubic zirconia and synthetic moissanite. Issued on 23 May 2023, it has applied since 1 December 2023.

Foreword
This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Guidelines for Standardization Work Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules for Standardization Documents" drafting.
1 Scope
This document describes the method principle, equipment, samples, selection of spectral collection methods, and test methods for identifying gemstones and gemstones by infrared spectroscopy.
Test steps, test data processing, main influencing factors and test report.
This document applies to the identification of gemstones with characteristic absorption by means of spectroscopy in the mid-infrared to near-infrared range.
2 Normative references
The contents of the following documents constitute the essential provisions of this document through normative references in the text. Among them, dated references For documents, only the version corresponding to the date is applicable to this document; for undated reference documents, the latest version (including all amendments) is applicable to this document.

3 Terms and Definitions
GB/T 6040-2019, GB/T 16553 and the following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1
A method of mixing a small amount of sample powder with an appropriate amount of potassium bromide powder and pressing it into a sheet, and collecting infrared spectra through transmission.
3.2
A method of collecting infrared spectra by letting infrared light pass directly through jewelry and jade samples.
3.3
A method of collecting infrared light reflected by the surface of the sample (specular reflection) to obtain a reflection infrared spectrum.
NOTE: Due to the correlation with the reflectance (corresponding to the refractive index), the spectrum may need to be corrected, making the necessary transformations.
3.4 attenuated total reflection
It is a method used for the determination of high absorption samples or sample surfaces. Infrared light is incident on a high surface close to the sample surface at an angle greater than the critical angle.
When the refractive index crystal is used, because the sample has a lower refractive index than the crystal, total reflection occurs, and the infrared light only enters the very shallow surface of the sample, and only certain frequencies are detected.
The attenuated total reflection spectrum of the sample is obtained by measuring this attenuated radiation.
Note: Attenuated total reflection, referred to as ATR. [Source: GB/T 6040-2019, 3.15, modified]
3.5 Transmittance
The ratio of the infrared radiant energy transmitted through the sample to the incident infrared radiant energy.
