Scope

GB/T 42340-2023 is the English-translated version of 生态系统评估 生态系统格局与质量评价方法.

GB/T 42340-2023 describes how the pattern and the quality of terrestrial ecosystems are assessed.

It covers the content and process of the assessment, the index system, the calculation of the indices and the assessment methods, the assessment results, an informative Annex A with an ecosystem classification system and an informative Annex B with a biomass calculation method.

Clause 3 defines ecosystem, ecosystem pattern, ecosystem type and ecosystem patch, and treats fragmentation as the loss of homogeneity and continuity under natural or human disturbance.

Clause 1 states that it applies to regional assessment of ecosystem pattern and quality based on data of the spatial distribution of ecosystems. Among the standards it quotes are GB/T 25528 and the HJ 710 guidelines for biodiversity observation. Issued on 17 March 2023, it has applied since 1 July 2023.

3 Terms and Definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.5 Due to the interference of natural or human factors, one type of ecosystem tends to be heterogeneous and discontinuous from a homogeneous and continuous whole

3.1 Ecosystem

A functional whole formed by organisms and their environment within a certain spatial range through energy flow, material flow, and information flow.

3.2 Ecosystem pattern

The arrangement and combination of various ecosystems in space.

Note: Including the type, number, spatial distribution and configuration of ecosystems, which are the results of various ecological processes at different scales.

3.3 Ecosystem type

At a specific scale, the composition of biological communities, structure and functional processes, succession characteristics, and community appearance are consistent ecosystem units.

3.4 Ecosystem patch

Spatial entities of ecosystems that differ in quality or appearance from their surroundings, depending on the spatial scale.
