Scope
GB/T 42228-2022 is the English-translated version of 粮食储藏 大米安全储藏技术规范.
GB/T 42228-2022 is the Chinese national technical specification for storing rice safely, and it also describes the verification methods that go with it.
It fixes the essential requirements for the warehouse and its equipment - ventilation, airtightness, moisture resistance and insulation, a suspended insulating ceiling, a light-coloured or solar-reflective roof, a marked grain-filling line, insect-proof lines and rodent and bird barriers at doors, windows and openings - then the intake requirements, where rice destined for low-temperature or quasi-low-temperature storage goes first into a buffer bin with the temperature difference kept within 10 °C, and the monitoring of temperature, humidity, moisture, insects, mites and mould during storage.
Its index continues with technical storage requirements, out-loading and records. It applies to packaged commercial rice in flat-roofed storehouses. Issued on 30 December 2022, it has applied since 1 July 2023.

3 Terms and Definitions
This document contains no terms or definitions that require clarification.
4 Essential Requirements for Warehouse Facilities and Equipment
4.1 Warehouse conditions regarding dust prevention, explosion protection, and illumination - as well as conditions required for low-temperature storage technology - shall comply with the relevant requirements of GB/T 29890.
4.2 Warehouse design shall comply with the requirements of GB 50320. Explosion-proof lighting fixtures shall be installed inside the warehouse, and the airtightness of the warehouse shall comply with the provisions of LS/T 1201.
4.3 The warehouse shall comply with the requirements for grain ventilation, airtightness, moisture resistance, and thermal insulation; it shall minimize the impact of adverse environmental conditions - particularly high temperature and high humidity - on the rice and prevent infestation by harmful organisms.
4.4 A suspended thermal insulation ceiling layer should be installed beneath the inner surface of the warehouse roof. The warehouse roof shall be intact and watertight; the exterior surface should feature a light-colored coating or a sprayed-on solar radiation-reflective material.
4.5 The grain-filling line shall be clearly marked on the inner surface of the warehouse walls, and the exterior surface of the walls should be white.
4.6 The structures of doors, windows, and ventilation openings shall be tight and incorporate thermal insulation and sealing measures. Insect-proof lines and rodent/bird-proof barriers or screens should be installed at doors, windows, and openings.
4.7 The interior space of the warehouse shall accommodate the operational needs of transport and intake/out-loading equipment.
4.8 The warehouse interior shall be clean and sanitary, free from contamination by insects, mold, or harmful substances.
4.9 Necessary grain storage facilities and equipment shall be provided based on specific grain storage ecological conditions, warehouse type, and actual needs. For rice warehouses with a storage period exceeding three months, it is advisable to equip them with a monitoring and control system of stored-grain condition which is compliant with the provisions of GB/T 26882.1, a mechanical ventilation system which is compliant with the provisions of LS/T 1202, sampling equipment, and specialized refrigeration and cooling equipment for grain storage which is compliant with the provisions of GB/T 18835.
5 Requirements for Rice Intake
5.1 Preparations Prior to Rice Intake
5.1.1 Warehouses, equipment, apparatus, and utensils shall be inspected.
5.1.2 Grain warehouses and storage locations shall be thoroughly cleaned to remove residual grain, dust, and debris; all holes, voids, and crevices shall be sealed and covered with appropriate thermal insulation materials.
5.1.3 The structural integrity of the warehouse and its doors and windows shall be ensured, and all equipment shall be in good working order.
5.1.4 If insect infestation is detected in the warehouse, packaging apparatuses, utensils, or equipment, insecticidal treatment shall be carried out, and appropriate isolation and protective measures implemented.
5.1.5 Rice packaging bags shall comply with the provisions of GB/T 24904 and GB/T 8946.
5.2 Quality Requirements for Rice Entering Storage
5.2.1 The quality of rice entering storage shall comply with the requirements of GB/T 1354.
5.2.2 Rice intended for low-temperature or quasi-low-temperature storage should not be placed directly into low-temperature storage bins; it shall first be placed in a buffer bin. The temperature difference between the rice entering storage and the buffer bin should be controlled within 10°C.
6 Monitoring and Treatment During Storage
6.1 Monitoring of Stored-Grain Condition
Monitoring of temperature, relative humidity, and moisture content shall be conducted in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 29890.
6.2 Insects, Mites, and Microorganisms
6.2.1 Pest monitoring shall be conducted based on the pest density assessment criteria specified in GB/T 29890. Pest control measures shall be determined based on pest density; for instance, if circulating fumigation is employed, it shall be carried out in accordance with LS/T 1201.
6.2.2 During seasons with higher temperatures and humidity, regular inspections for heating and mold growth are required. If heating or mold growth occurs, remedial measures such as in-bin turning, spreading for aeration, mechanical ventilation, mechanical refrigeration, or low-temperature drying may be adopted.
6.2.3 Grain pile heating caused by the activity of insects and mites shall be treated in conjunction with fumigation. Fumigants and fumigation methods shall comply with the requirements of GB/T 22497 and LS/T 1201. […]
