GB/T 42175-2022 is the Chinese laboratory method for measuring copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and chromium in drilling mud and cuttings from offshore oil exploration and development.
The pretreated sample is digested with nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide and hydrofluoric acid, then measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in dilute nitric acid, with argon as carrier gas, a quadrupole collision or reaction cell to remove interfering ions, and each element's content worked out from the detector signal and its sensitivity factor K. Superior-grade reagents and class II water to GB/T 6682 are required.
The mud it covers is water-based mud of oil content below 10% by mass, the cuttings below 15%. It warns that some reagents are toxic or corrosive and that laboratory experience is needed. Issued on 30 December 2022, it has applied since 1 April 2023.

3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 drilling mud and cuttings
