GB/T 40747-2021 is the English-translated version of 饲料瘤胃可发酵有机物(FOM)测定方法.

GB/T 40747-2021 gives a nylon bag method for determining how much of the organic matter in a feed can be fermented in the rumen of cattle and sheep. It applies to plant-based feed materials and to total mixed rations (TMR).

The method rests on the real-time rumen degradation rate, the share of a component degraded after a given time in the rumen, and on the outflow rate of rumen digesta, which together give the effective rumen degradation rate under actual feeding conditions.

1 Scope

3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 Fermentable organic matter (FOM) in the rumen

Plant-based feed ingredients, total mixed rations (TMR), organic matter that can be fermented by rumen microorganisms.

3.2 Real-time rumen degradation rate

The mass of a certain ingredient degraded after the feed stays in the rumen for a certain period of time accounts for the percentage of the sample.

3.3 Rumen chyme outflow rate

The mass of chyme flowing out of the rumen per unit time accounts for the percentage of the total mass of chyme in the rumen.

3.4 Effective rumen degradation rate

The degradation rate calculated based on the real-time degradation rate at different time points and the outflow rate of rumen chyme under actual feeding conditions.
