GB/T 40738-2021 is the process specification for building investment casting shells quickly with a colloidal silica (silica sol) binder.
It covers the raw and auxiliary materials used, the technical requirements of the rapid shell-making process and the inspection and test methods, and serves for selecting those materials, setting the process and controlling it.
Its definitions separate ordinary silica sol, a rapidly drying silica sol modified to shorten shell drying time, and quick-drying agents, usually water-soluble polymers added to the silica sol coating.

1 Scope
This document specifies the raw and auxiliary materials used in the rapid shell-making of investment casting silica sol, the technical requirements for the rapid shell-making process, and the inspection and testing methods.
This document is applicable to the selection, process formulation and process control of raw and auxiliary materials for rapid shell making of investment casting silica sol.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions defined in GB/T 5611 apply to this document.
3.1 Silica sol (colloidal silica)
Binder for investment casting, and refractory powder to form coating for investment casting.
Note: Generally alkaline, with Na as stabilizer, molecular formula. mSiO2·nH2O.
3.2 Rapidly dried sol silicate
By modifying the microstructure of silica sol micelles, surface ion modification, adding water-soluble polymer materials or a combination of several measures, shrinking Special silica sol varieties with short shell drying time.
3.3 Quick-drying agent
An auxiliary shell material that can shorten the drying time of the shell after adding silica sol coating, generally a water-soluble polymer material.
