GB/T 40006.9-2021 is the English-translated version of 塑料 再生塑料 第9部分:聚对苯二甲酸乙二醇酯(PET)材料.
Part 9 of China's national standard series for recycled plastics, covering PET. It specifies the classification and naming, the requirements, the test methods and the inspection rules. PET is the success story of plastics recycling: bottles are collected in enormous quantity, they are made of one polymer, they are easy to identify and separate by density, and the recycled material has a real market in fibre, sheet and new bottles. China is both the largest producer of PET and the largest processor of recycled PET fibre. The technical constraint is intrinsic viscosity, which is the industry's proxy for molecular weight: every melt cycle and every trace of moisture cuts the chains, and the viscosity determines what the material can be made into - bottle grade needs the highest, sheet less, and fibre least. That is why the recycling chain is a cascade, and why the grading in this part is built around that number.
