GB/T 36985-2018 is the English-translated version of 纸、纸板和纸制品挥发性有机化合物的测定.

GB/T 36985-2018 is the Chinese test method for the volatile organic compounds released by paper, board and paper products. It describes a gas bag method and a headspace method.

In the gas bag method the sample is conditioned in a nitrogen-filled bag at set temperature and time, the gas is collected with a sampling tube, desorbed thermally and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the VOC content or total volatile organic compound (TVOC) content is calculated.

The standard lists the reagents, including methanol and a set of typical volatile organic compounds identified by CAS number, such as benzene, toluene, the xylenes, styrene and chlorinated solvents.

Because the standard solutions are volatile and toxic, it asks for preparation in a fume hood with protective equipment. It was issued on 28 December 2018 and has applied since 1 July 2019.

1 Scope

This standard specifies methods for the determination of volatile organic compounds in paper, paperboard and paper products using the gas bag method and the headspace method.

2 Gas bag method

2.1 Principle

Put the sample into the gas bag, and after treatment under certain temperature and time conditions, the volatile organic compounds in the sample are released and mixed. Put into the nitrogen in the bag. The gas in the bag was collected by a sampling tube, and then treated with a thermal analyzer, and then tested by a gas chromatography mass spectrometer. According to the test As a result, volatile organic compound (VOCs) content or total volatile organic compound (TVOC) content was calculated.
