China's national specification for the control and protection equipment of voltage source converter HVDC transmission systems. VSC-HVDC - flexible DC transmission, as it is known in China - is the newer of the two high voltage direct current technologies, and the difference from the classic line-commutated kind is fundamental. A classic converter needs a strong AC system to commutate against and cannot start one from nothing; a voltage source converter makes its own AC waveform with switched semiconductors, so it can feed a passive network, ride through faults, control real and reactive power independently and reverse power flow without reversing polarity. That is what makes it the technology for offshore wind connections, for feeding islands and weak grids, and for the multi-terminal DC grids China has been building. All of that capability lives in the control and protection equipment, which is why it is specified as a product: the converter hardware is unremarkable without it.

1 Scope

China's national specification for the control and protection equipment of voltage source converter HVDC transmission systems. This standard specifies the flexible DC transmission system control and protection equipment, general requirements, functional and technical performance requirements, test requirements, standard Chi label requirements, packaging, transportation and storage requirements, the supply of complete sets of requirements and quality assurance. This standard applies to back-to-back, double-ended, multi-terminal flexible DC transmission system control and protection equipment (hereinafter referred to as equipment), can be used as equipment Design, manufacture, testing, inspection basis.
