1 Scope

China's national standard for crawler pipelayers. A pipelayer is a tracked tractor with a boom on one side and a counterweight on the other, built for one job: lifting a welded pipeline string off the skids and lowering it into the trench. It looks like a crane and is not one. The load hangs from a fixed boom that swings only with the machine, the counterweight is extended or retracted to balance rather than the boom being luffed, and pipelayers work in gangs of three or four spaced along the string, each carrying part of a load that is flexing between them. That last point is what makes the machine specialised: the pipe is a beam hundreds of metres long, it must not be bent past its elastic limit while being lowered, and the machines must move together so that no one of them takes too much. The requirements cover the lifting capacity, the stability and the controllability that this work demands, in a machine that also has to travel a right of way across open country.

This standard specifies the classification, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, signs, packaging, transportation and storage of crawler pipelayer. This standard applies to the working device for hydraulic transmission, mechanical transmission crawler pipe hanging machine (hereinafter referred to as pipelayer).
