1 Scope

China's national standard for resin-bonded agglomerated stone slabs. It specifies the terms and definitions, the classification, the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marking, packaging, transport and storage, and it applies to decorative resin-based agglomerated stone. This is the material sold as engineered or quartz stone: crushed quartz or marble, up to about ninety-three per cent by weight, bound with a few per cent of polyester resin and pressed under vacuum with vibration into a slab. It took a large share of the kitchen worktop market from natural granite because it is consistent - a slab looks like the sample, which no quarried stone can promise - and because it is non-porous, so it does not need sealing and does not stain. What it does not do is take heat, since the binder is a polymer, and its dust carries the respirable crystalline silica that has caused an occupational silicosis outbreak among fabricators internationally. The standard's requirements cover the properties that follow from that composition.
