1 Scope

China's national method for determining formamide in footwear and footwear components by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. It applies to foamed materials in footwear and its parts. Formamide is there as a residue of manufacture rather than as an ingredient: it is used as a blowing agent in making the ethylene vinyl acetate foam that midsoles, sandals and the soft play mats sold as puzzle tiles are moulded from, and some of it stays in the foam and migrates out over the following weeks. It is classified as toxic for reproduction, and it was found at unexpected levels in children's foam products in Europe around 2010, which triggered recalls and then limits. Since the foam gives it off slowly, the exposure is by inhalation and by skin contact with a product a child may sit or lie on for hours. Measuring it needs GC-MS because the quantities are small and the matrix is a polymer full of other volatiles, and this method fixes the extraction, the separation and the confirmation.

3 Principle

4 Reagent

5 Instruments and equipment

6 Analysis steps
