GB/T 34723-2017 gives the gas chromatographic method for determining the residual styrene monomer content of unsaturated polyester decorative wood-based panels.

Clause 1 states that the standard specifies that determination and that it applies to the determination of residual styrene monomer content in unsaturated polyester resin decorative panels used in interior decoration, furniture, doors and musical instruments.

The title page and the foreword record that the standard was prepared with reference to ISO 4901-2011, on the determination by gas chromatography of the residual styrene monomer content as well as the content of other volatile aromatic hydrocarbons in reinforced plastics, and that its consistency with ISO 4901-2011 is not equivalent.

Clause 3 takes its terms from GB/T 4946 and adds the unsaturated polyester resin decorative wood-based panel, taken from definition 3.1 of LY/T 1070-2013 as a panel made by coating a wood-based substrate, such as plywood, fibreboard, particleboard or blockboard, with decorative paper or veneer on one or both sides and then with unsaturated polyester resin which is cured, and the residual styrene monomer content, meaning the styrene monomer left unreacted during processing.

Clause 4 states the principle: the residual styrene monomer is extracted from the unsaturated polyester resin polymer with methylene chloride, and the styrene monomer content of the extract is determined by gas chromatography using the internal standard method and the standard curve method.

Clause 5 opens with a warning on the toxicity of dichloromethane, requires the reagents to be given a blank test before use to confirm that no interfering peaks appear in the retention time interval of the target, and specifies nitrogen or helium of purity not less than 99.995 % as the carrier gas and hydrogen of the same purity.
