GB/T 34354-2017 is the English-translated version of 全断面隧道掘进机术语和商业规格.

China's national standard for the vocabulary and commercial specification of full face tunnel boring machines. It defines the terms and specifies what a commercial offer must state, and it applies to all types of full face machine used for tunnels, adits, access roads and pipeline construction.

A tunnel boring machine is not bought off a shelf. It is designed for one tunnel: for that ground, that diameter, that gradient, that water pressure, that length.

By the time it is finished it is a factory several hundred metres long that builds the tunnel lining behind itself as it advances, and it is generally worth more than the contractor buying it has ever spent on a single item.

Which makes the commercial specification the substance of this standard rather than an appendix to it.

What is the machine's rated thrust, its installed cutterhead power, its designed advance rate, the ground it is specified for, what is included in the price and what is not - these have to mean the same thing to buyer and builder before a contract is signed, because there is no second machine to compare it with.
