China's national standard for the vocabulary and commercial specification of full face tunnel boring machines. It defines the terms and specifies what a commercial offer must state, and it applies to all types of full face machine used for tunnels, adits, access roads and pipeline construction. A tunnel boring machine is not bought off a shelf. It is designed for one tunnel: for that ground, that diameter, that gradient, that water pressure, that length. By the time it is finished it is a factory several hundred metres long that builds the tunnel lining behind itself as it advances, and it is generally worth more than the contractor buying it has ever spent on a single item.
