Foreword

GB/T 33779 "Guidelines for Testing Optical Fiber Characteristics" is divided into the following parts.

---Part 1: Attenuation uniformity;

---Part 2: OTDR backscattering curve analysis;

---Part 3: Effective area (Aeff). This part is Part 3 of GB/T 33779.

This section was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.

1 Scope

This part of GB/T 33779 specifies the benchmark test method (RTM) and alternative test methods for the effective area (Aeff) of single-mode fiber.

The test equipment, samples and sample preparation, test procedures, calculation methods and results are determined.

This section applies to the Class B single-mode fiber specified in GB/T 9771 (all parts).

3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 Effectivearea

Aeff A parameter closely related to fiber nonlinearity, which will affect the transmission quality of fiber optic systems, especially in long-distance optical amplification systems The transmission quality, the effective area Aeff can be defined by equation (1). 2piintegral Ir()rdr[] 2 I r() 2rdr (1) Where.

I(r)---The near-field field intensity distribution of the fundamental mode of the optical fiber at the radius r.

Note 1.I(r) is integrated over the entire fiber cross section.

Note 2.For single-mode fiber, the relationship between the effective area (Aeff) and the mode field diameter (MFD) can be found in Appendix A.

3.2 Non-linear coefficient

For a particularly strong light field, the refractive index of the fiber is related to the intensity of the light in the fiber, which is expressed as formula (2). Application in high power density system When the optical fiber is nonlinear, the system performance will be degraded. The nonlinear coefficient is defined as n2/Aeff.

Where. n ---refractive index; n0 --- the linear part of the refractive index; n2---nonlinear refractive index coefficient; I ---Intensity of light in the optical fiber.
