Foreword

This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.

This standard was proposed by and is under the administration of the National Technical Committee on Containers of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 6).

GB/T 33574-2017 was issued on 12 May 2017 by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and the Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China, and has been in force since 1 December 2017.

1 Scope

China's national standard for the manufacturer's serial number of a freight container - the number stamped into the steel when the box is built. A container in service carries several identities and they are not the same thing. The owner's code and equipment identification number painted on the side identify it commercially, and they are repainted when the box changes hands, so a container that has been sold three times has answered to three different numbers. The manufacturer's serial number does not change. The standard makes that explicit in a note to its scope: the serial number is the product's works number and the container's only permanent identity code, used by interested parties to identify it. That permanence is what makes it useful. When a structural defect turns up in service and has to be traced back to a works and a production run, when the true age of a box has to be established for a survey or a sale, or when ownership is in dispute, the painted number proves nothing and the stamped one settles it. The standard specifies the coding rules and the marking requirements, gives the code four parts - manufacturing plant code, size and type code, year of manufacture and serial number - and requires the number to be struck on the corner posts, the corner fittings and other important structural parts of the box before it leaves the works. It applies to the freight containers specified in GB/T 1413, and other types of container and container ancillary equipment may refer to it.

NOTE: This manufacturer's serial number is the works number of the product, and is also the only permanent identity code of the container; it is used by interested parties to identify the identity information of that container.

4 Marking requirements

The manufacturer's serial number of the container shall be marked, at the time the container leaves the works, on the corner posts, the corner fittings and other important structural parts of the container body.
