GB/T 31784-2026 is the English-translated version of 马铃薯商品薯分级与检验规程.

GB/T 31784-2026 is the Chinese national standard covering grading ware potatoes - the size and shape, the greening, the sprouting, the internal and external defects and the tolerances at each grade, plus the sampling and inspection of a consignment. It replaces GB/T 31784-2015 and has been in force since 1 November 2026, completing the potato set of this batch. It was issued on 30 April 2026 and takes effect on 1 November 2026, replacing GB/T 31784-2015. The document is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part

1.Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents". Drafting. This document replaces GB/T 31784-2015 "Grading and Inspection Procedures for Commercial Potatoes". Compared with GB/T 31784-2015, except for... Aside from structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows:

a) The quality grading criteria have been changed. Grade 1, ">=95% (150g or more)", has been changed to ">=200g". Grade 2, ">=100g" has been changed... ">=93%" was changed to "100g~200g", and the third-level "75g or less >=90%" was changed to "30g~100g"; the description of rot was also changed. The grading index for the rate has been changed, with "<=3" for Grade 2 changed to "<=1" and "<=5" for Grade 3 changed to "<=2"; the grading index for impurities has also been changed. Change Level 1 "<=2" to "<=0.5", Level 2 "<=3" to "<=1", and Level 3 "<=5" to "<=2"; the machine was changed. The value "<=10" has been changed to "<=5", and the value for Level 3 "<=15" has been changed to "<=10"; the total defect classification index has been changed, with Level 1 now having a value of "<=7". The value was changed to "<=10", and the value for Level 3 was changed from "<=17" to "<=15"; the fried product defect rate index was also changed, with Level 1's value changed from "<=10" to... The value of "<=20" for Level 2 has been changed to "<=25"; the dry matter content index for Level 1 has also been modified, with "21.00~24.00" changed to... Change to "<=5"; the grading index for mechanical damage has been changed, from "<=5" for Level 1 to "<=3", and "<=10" for Level 2 to... The value of "<=5" was changed, and the value of "<=15" for level three was changed to "<=10"; the internal color-changing index was changed, and the value of "<=3" for level two was changed to "<=2"; the value of "<=5" for level three was changed to "<=10"; the value of "<=1... The grading standard for the color defect rate of fried dough sticks has been changed from "<=5" to "<=4"; the grading index for the color defect rate of fried dough sticks has also been changed, with "0" for Grade 1 changed to "<=10" and "<=10" for Grade 2 changed to "<=10". The value of "<=10" was changed to "<=15", and the value of "<=20" for level 3 was changed to "<=30"; the dry matter content index was also changed for level 3. "18.50~19.99" has been changed to "18.00~19.99" (see Table 3,.2015 version).

e) The impurity grading criteria were changed, with "<=4" for Grade II changed to "<=5" and "<=6" for Grade III changed to "<=8"; the decay rate was also changed. The grading indicators were changed as follows: Level 1 "<=1" was changed to "<=2", Level 2 "<=2" was changed to "<=4", and Level 3 "<=3" was changed to "<=5". The grading criteria for mixed varieties have been changed. Level 1 "<=5" has been changed to "<=2", Level 2 "<=8" has been changed to "<=5", and Level 3... The grading criteria for green tangerine peel have been changed. "<=10" for Grade 1 has been changed to "<=3", and "<=3" for Grade 2 has been changed to... The value of "<=5" in Level 3 has been changed to "<=7" (see Table 4,.2015 version).

f) Added a percentage indicator for potato tubers with a diameter of 4cm or more. Level 1 is ">=50%", Level 2 is ">=40%", and Level 3 is ">=30%"; (Changed) The grading index for decay rate has been revised, changing "<=1" for Level 1 to "<=5", "<=3" for Level 2 to "<=10", and "<=5" for Level 3 to... Change to "<=15"; the impurity classification index has been changed, with "<=4" for grade 2 changed to "<=5" and "<=6" for grade 3 changed to "<=8"; changes... The grading criteria for insect bites have been revised. Level 1 "<=3" has been changed to "<=5", Level 2 "<=5" has been changed to "<=10", and Level 3 "<=10" has been changed... The grading criteria for mechanical damage have been changed from "<=15" to "<=10" for Level 1 and "<=12" for Level 2. The standard for Level 3 has been changed from "<=17" to "<=20"; the starch content standard for Level 1 has also been changed from ">=16.00" to... ">=15.00", the second level ">=13.00" is changed to ">=12.00" (see Table 5,.2015 version);

g) The cross-sectional area of the fries was changed from "0.2cm2" to "0.4cm2" (see D.4.1,.2015 edition). Please note that some content in this document may involve patents. 1.Scope This document specifies the grades of commercial potatoes for different uses (fresh consumption, potato chip processing, French fry processing, potato flour processing, and starch processing). Technical requirements such as quality requirements, inspection methods, grade determination, packaging, and labeling. This document applies to the grading of commercial potatoes.

4.Grading and Inspection Procedures for Commercial Potatoes The potato grading and inspection procedure consists of six stages. grading (Chapter 5), quality requirements (Chapter 6), and inspection methods. (Chapter 7), Level Determination (Chapter 8), Packaging (Chapter 8), Labeling (Chapter 9). The testing methods include sampling (7.1) and testing methods. Method (7.2).

5 Grading of commercial potatoes

5.1 Types. According to their uses, they are mainly divided into fresh food type, potato chip processing type, French fry processing type, whole flour processing type, and starch processing type.

5.2 Levels. Level 1, Level 2, Level 3.

6 Quality requirements for commercial potatoes

6.1 Fresh-eating type The grading indicators for fresh-eating commercial potatoes are shown in Table 1.

6.2 Potato Chip Processing Type

6.2.1 Basic Requirements The basic requirements for potato chips are as follows:

---Round or oval shape, with shallow eyes;

---Reducing sugar content is less than 0.2%;

---Sugar content is less than 0.15mg/g.

6.2.2 Grading Indicators The grading indicators for potato chips are shown in Table 2.

6.3 French Fry Processing Type

6.3.1 Basic Requirements The basic requirements for processed potatoes used in French fry production are as follows:

---Elongated or oblong-oval shape, shallow buds;

---Reducing sugar content (mass fraction) is less than 0.25%;

---Sugar content is less than 0.15mg/g.

6.3.2 Grading Indicators The grading indicators for processed potato products are shown in Table 3.

6.5 Starch processing type The grading indicators for starch-processed commercial potatoes are shown in Table 5.

7.1 Sampling

7.1.1 Perform in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 8855.

7.1.2 For random sampling inspection, samples should be taken from different locations and heights of the batch of goods.

7.1.3 The sampling quantity of packaged potatoes shall be in accordance with Table 6; the sampling quantity of bulk potatoes shall be in accordance with Table 7.

7.1.4 Both parties shall take samples jointly or entrust a third party to take samples.

7.2 Detection Method

7.2.1 Rotting, green skin, mechanical damage, deformity, insect damage, black spot disease, scab disease and powdery scab disease, sprouting, impurities, and varietal mixing shall be detected by visual inspection. For specific symptom images, please refer to Appendix A. Calculate the mass fraction as shown in formula (1).

7.2.2 Hollow structures and internal discoloration were detected by longitudinal section visual inspection. See Appendix A for specific symptom images. Calculate the mass percentage.

7.2.3 The stem axis length is measured using a ruler, and the mass fraction is calculated.

7.2.4 The dry matter content shall be determined by the water specific gravity method, and the specific method shall be in accordance with the method in Appendix B.

7.2.5 The reducing sugar content shall be determined according to GB 5009.7 and the sucrose content shall be determined according to GB 5009.8.

7.2.6 Visually inspect the color of the potato chips during frying according to standard procedures, and calculate the percentage of chips with discolored or spotted chips out of the total fried chip weight. Specific methods are as follows: Measured according to Appendix C.

7.2.7 The color of French fries after frying shall be determined using a colorimetric plate, and the specific method shall be as specified in Appendix D. Level

8 Judgment

8.1 The sampling samples should be graded according to the indicators in Tables 1 to 5 based on the intended use of the commercial potatoes.

8.2 If the test values of the sampled items fully meet the test indicators of the corresponding level, they shall be judged as the corresponding level.

8.3 Products that fail to meet the requirements of Level 3 testing indicators are classified as substandard products.

9 Packaging

9.1 The packaging of commercial potatoes shall comply with the provisions of NY/T 1655.

9.2 Each batch of packaging materials (bags, boxes, packages, etc.) should be consistent in size, quality, and appearance.

9.3 Tubers of different grades should be packaged separately.

9.4 The packaging materials should be clean, dry, sturdy, and breathable, free from pollution, odor, insect infestation, rot, and mold, and free from sharp or protruding objects inside or out.

9.5 The net weight of the potatoes in each batch of packaging (bags, boxes, packages, etc.) should be consistent.

9.6 The net weight of the potatoes should be consistent with the net weight indicated on the packaging.

9.7 Handle with care during packaging, minimize movement, and strictly prevent mechanical damage.

10 Markings

10.1 The following information should be displayed on the packaging or label of commercial potatoes.

---Variety Name;

---Place of origin;

---Suitable uses;

---Harvest date;

---Storage method;

---The name, address, and contact information of the manufacturing company.

10.2 The content of the label should be accurate and truthful.

10.3 Use standardized text labels.

10.4 The handwriting should be clear, durable, and easy to recognize and read.
