1 Scope

China's national terminology standard for embroidery machines. It is Part 2 of GB/T 30420 and defines the terms and definitions of embroidery machinery, and it applies to the manufacture, research, teaching and trade of embroidery machines and to related fields. China builds most of the world's industrial embroidery machines, and the vocabulary of the trade grew up inside the factories of Zhejiang and Guangdong rather than out of any international standard, which is exactly why it needed fixing. The document defines around two hundred terms across six groups: the basic terms of embroidery itself, product names, mechanism and component terms, control system and electrical terms, design and operating terms, and special embroidery techniques. The basic terms group is where most of the difficulty lies, because a modern industrial embroidery machine performs several quite different operations that all get called embroidery in casual speech - lock stitch embroidery, chain stitch and towelling embroidery, embroidery applying cord, sequins, beads or tape, and special stitch types - and each of them uses the threads differently. In coiling or winding embroidery, for instance, the needle thread and a separate core thread do different jobs, and the standard defines each thread by the function it performs rather than by where it sits in the machine. That precision matters commercially: a machine specification, a service manual and a customs declaration all have to name the same capability the same way, and an embroidery machine's price depends almost entirely on which of these techniques it can perform.
