3.1 Explosive atmospheres

Under ambient conditions, the atmosphere in which the mixture of gas, vapor, mist or dust-like combustible material and air is ignited and the combustion propagates throughout the unburned mixture.

3.2 Hazardous areas

The area in which the amount of hazardous atmosphere existed or expected to exist is sufficient to require that special precautions be taken on the structure, installation and use of electrical equipment.

3.3 Equipment for use in explosive atmospheres

The general term of the electrical explosion proof equipment and non-electrical explosion proof equipment which is used alone or in combination in the explosive atmosphere which can prevent explosion caused by its potential ignition source. For example, machinery, instrumentation, stationary or mobile devices, control units, instruments and probing or protection system that may cause explosion due to their own potential ignition sources during the energy generation, transmission, storage, measurement, control, conversion and/or material processing, etc.

3.4 Protective systems for use in explosive atmospheres

"Protective system" refers to some design unit that immediately stops the explosion that has just occurred and/or limits the effective range of the explosion flame and explosion pressure. The protective system can be fitted to the device or be put on the market separately as an autonomous system.

3.5 Components for use in explosive atmospheres

Any component that is critical to the safety functions of the equipment and protective system but does not function autonomously.

3.6 Equipment groups and protection level
