Scope

GB/T 24419-2009 is the English-translated version of 中华人民共和国国际道路运输车辆国籍识别标志.

China's national standard for the nationality identification mark carried by Chinese vehicles in international road transport. It specifies the design, the dimensions, the colours, the materials and the display of the mark, and it applies to vehicles engaged in international road transport operations. The mark is the small oval plate that identifies the country in which a vehicle is registered, and it exists because a registration plate does not. A vehicle crossing a border carries a plate in a format the receiving country's police, customs and insurers may not recognise, in a script they may not read, and the nationality mark resolves that in one glance - it is required by the road traffic conventions, it is what an insurer's green card system and a bilateral transport agreement refer to, and a vehicle without a correct one can be stopped and turned back at the frontier regardless of the rest of its documents. So the standard is short and entirely prescriptive. It fixes the letters and their form, the oval shape and its proportions, the exact dimensions, the black-on-white colour scheme, the typeface and the stroke widths, and the position on the vehicle - at the rear, separate from the registration plate, not obscured by anything, and legible from a stated distance. It also fixes the materials and their durability, since the mark lives outdoors on the back of a truck for years and one that has faded or peeled is the same as one that is absent. And it covers the requirements for the mark on a trailer as well as on the towing vehicle, since both cross the border and both are separately identified. Issued on 30 September 2009 and in force since 1 February 2010.
