Scope
GB/T 22596-2008 is the English-translated version of 水处理剂 铁含量测定方法通则.
GB/T 22596-2008 fixes the general method for determining the iron content of water treatment chemicals. Clause 1 states that it applies to the determination of iron in the test solution of a water treatment agent over the range of 10 micrograms to 500 micrograms.
The method summary explains the chemistry: ferric iron in the test solution is reduced to ferrous iron with ascorbic acid, the ferrous iron then forms an orange-red complex with the colour-developing reagent at a pH between 2 and 9.00, and the absorbance is read on a spectrophotometer at the maximum absorption wavelength of 510 nm, the complex being measured at pH 4 to 6 under certain conditions.
The same clause sets out the interference picture, listing the alkali metals, calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, manganese, arsenic, uranium, lead, chloride, bromide, iodide, thiocyanate, acetate, perchlorate, sulfate, nitrate, sulfide, partial borate, selenium, citrate, tartrate and phosphate, as well as germanium below 100 mg, as not interfering even in large amounts, while warning that colour development is slow when citrate, tartrate, arsenate or more than 100 mg of phosphate is present in the test solution.
The reagents clause requires analytical-grade reagents and grade three water complying with GB/T 6682, directs that impurity standard solutions and preparations be made up in accordance with GB/T 602 and GB/T 603, and carries a safety note that the strong acids used are corrosive, are to be rinsed off with plenty of water on contact and must not be inhaled or allowed to touch the skin.
It then specifies the working solutions, among them hydrochloric acid at 1+1, ammonia at 1+2, a persulfate solution at 40 g/L, an acetic acid and sodium acetate buffer at pH 4.5, an ascorbic acid solution at 100 g/L usable for one week, the colour reagent at 2 g/L, an iron stock standard solution at 0.1 mg/mL in which one millilitre contains 0.100 mg of iron, and an iron standard solution at 20 micrograms per millilitre.
The standard was proposed by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, is administered by SAC/TC63/SC5 and was drafted by the CNOOC Tianjin Chemical Research and Design Institute together with Tianjin Pacific Technology Co., Ltd., under ICS 71.040.40 and Chinese standard class G76. It was issued on 2008-12-23 and has applied since 2009-09-01.

1 Scope
This standard specifies the iron content in the water treatment agent determination General.
This standard applies to the treatment agent in the test solution for the determination of iron content in the water within the range 10µg ~ 500µg.

4 Reagents and materials
The reagents used in this standard, unless otherwise specified, shall use analytical reagent and in line with GB/T 6682 stipulated three of water.

4.1 Hydrochloric acid solution. 1 + 1.

4.4 Acetic acid - sodium acetate buffer solution. pH = 4.5.
4.5 Ascorbic acid solution. 100g/L. The solution was to use a period of one week.
4.6 1,10-phenanthrene morpholino solution. 2g/L.
4.7 Iron stock standard solution. 0.1mg/mL. 1mL of this standard solution contains 0.100mg of iron (Fe).
