1 Scope

GB/T 22517.12-2024 is Part 12 of the Chinese series on sports venue requirements and test methods, and covers natural climbing crags. It is an unusual object for a standard, because the venue is a cliff that nobody designed and that changes with weather and use; what can be specified is the state a crag must be in before it is opened to the public and how that state is verified. The standard sets the requirements for the rock wall itself, the climbing surface, the protection points, the fall space below the climber and the exclusion space around the route, together with other requirements on access and signage, and then the inspection methods for each of those - the rock wall, the climbing surface, the protection points, the fall space and the exclusion space - with an annex on the basic requirements, the protection points and the top rope protection system. It took effect on 23 August 2024.

This document specifies the requirements, inspection methods and rules for determining compliance for natural climbing sites. This document applies to the construction, inspection and use of natural rock climbing sites for sports competitions, training, and fitness and leisure.

3 Terms and definitions

The terms and definitions defined in GB 19079.4 and the following apply to this document.

3.1 natural climbing venue A climbing site that allows safe climbing using natural rock walls.

3.2 Climbing route Climbing routes The path taken by climbers up the rock face.

3.3 protection point A device installed on a climbing route to provide safety protection for climbers.

3.3.1 Top protection point A fixed protection point at the top of a climbing route.

Note. The top belay can be used for top rope or lead climbing.

3.3.2 Top master point A protection point formed by connecting two or more top protection points.

3.3.3 primary protection point A fixed protection point at the beginning of a climbing route.

3.4 Top protection system The system consisting of all top protection points, the top main protection point (if any) and the connecting devices between them.
