Scope

GB/T 21373-2023 is the English-translated version of 知识产权文献与信息 分类及代码.

GB/T 21373-2023 covers the classification and coding of intellectual property documentation and information — the material recorded on any carrier, in text, graphics, symbols, audio or video, that relates to intellectual property theory, systems and the activity around them. It establishes the classification structure, then the encoding method, separated into codes drawn from the main table and compound codes, and then the tables themselves: the basic categories table, the main table and the subdivision table. What it deliberately leaves alone is the technical classification of patents, trademarks and copyright works, which have schemes of their own; this one orders the literature about intellectual property, not the rights. That boundary is what makes the scheme workable, and the coding is what makes it useful: a library, a patent information service and a policy research centre indexing the same body of material have to arrive at the same code for it, or a search across their collections returns whatever each cataloguer happened to choose. The 2023 edition replaces the 2008 one, which matters to anyone holding a collection already coded to the old table. For intellectual property information services, libraries and the database builders who index them.

Classification and code

1 Scope

This document establishes the classification system of intellectual property documents and information, and gives the classification and codes of intellectual property documents and information.

This document applies to the classification and indexing of intellectual property documents and information.

This document does not apply to technical classifications such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights (copyrights).
