Scope

GB/T 18114.2-2010 is the English-translated version of 稀土精矿化学分析方法 第2部分:氧化钍量的测定.

GB/T 18114.2-2010 is Part 2 of GB/T 18114 on the chemical analysis of rare earth concentrates and fixes the determination of their thorium oxide content.

Clause 1 states that it applies to the determination of thorium oxide in rare earth concentrates and gives each method its range, 0.0020 % to 0.30 % for method 1 and above 0.30 % to 8.00 % for method 2.

Method 1 is inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and its principle clause has the sample decomposed by fusion with sodium hydroxide and sodium peroxide, silicon, aluminium and sodium separated out, the filter paper and precipitate destroyed with nitric and perchloric acid, the residue taken up in dilute acid, and the solution ionized in an argon plasma source and measured directly by plasma mass spectrometry against calibration standards.

The reagents and materials clause lists sodium hydroxide, sodium peroxide, nitric acid, perchloric acid, hydrochloric acid, a sodium hydroxide wash solution at 20 g/L, argon of at least 99.99 %, thorium oxide stock and working standard solutions prepared from thorium dioxide of at least 99.95 % purity down to 1 microgram of thorium oxide per millilitre, and indium stock and internal standard solutions prepared from indium metal of at least 99.9 % purity down to 1 microgram of indium per millilitre, with the weighings, acid volumes and dilution steps spelled out.

The instrument clause requires an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer with a mass resolution better than 0.8 plus or minus 0.1 amu.

The foreword records that GB/T 18114 is divided into eleven parts, the others covering total rare earth oxide, calcium oxide, niobium, zirconium and titanium oxides, aluminium oxide, silica, iron oxide, fifteen individual rare earth element oxides, phosphorus pentoxide, moisture and fluorine, and it notes that this part changed the measuring technique away from the gravimetric method and widened the measuring range from 2.00 % to 7.00 % out to 0.0020 % to 8.00 %.

It is administered by SAC/TC229, was drafted under the responsibility of the Baotou Research Institute of Rare Earths and the Standard Metrology and Quality Institute of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry, with the two methods drafted respectively at Baotou and at the Ganzhou Nonferrous Metallurgy Research Institute, and falls under ICS 77.120.99 and Chinese standard class H14.

It replaces GB/T 18114.2-2000, was issued on 2011-01-14 and has applied since 2011-11-01.
