1 Scope

China's national standard for the nomenclature and location of auricular acupuncture points - the map of the ear used in auricular therapy, in which points on the external ear are held to correspond to parts and functions of the body. It specifies the names and the anatomical locations of the auricular points, and it applies to the teaching, the practice, the research and the documentation of auricular therapy. Whatever one thinks of the underlying claim, the standardisation problem is real and the reason for the document is straightforward: auricular therapy is practised and taught widely, several competing maps of the ear were in circulation with different names for the same location and the same name for different locations, and without a common map neither a clinical record nor a research result can be interpreted by anyone other than its author. This standard fixes one map. It divides the external ear anatomically - the helix, the antihelix and its crura, the tragus and antitragus, the concha and its divisions, the lobule, the triangular fossa and the scapha - and locates each named point by reference to those anatomical landmarks rather than by measurement from an arbitrary origin, which is what makes the location transferable between ears of different size and shape. It gives the standard name of each point, its code, and its position, with the divisions of the ear surface defined first so that the positions can be stated unambiguously. The document is large because the number of named points is large and each has to be located individually. Issued on 23 April 2008 and in force since 1 July 2008, it replaces GB/T 13734-1992.
