This standard states technical requirements for digital microwave communication systems in connection with their use on public networks. Microwave links carry telecom traffic between sites, including backhaul for mobile networks. The document is useful to equipment manufacturers, network operators, telecom designers, test laboratories and those responsible for type approval or network access, who need a common technical basis for judging whether equipment may be connected.

It is a recommended national standard, issued on 28 September 2026 and effective from 1 April 2027, and it replaces GB/T 13159-2008. Operators and suppliers working to the older edition should plan to update specifications and test plans. Use is voluntary unless required by contract or a network access rule. Foreign radio equipment suppliers selling into Chinese carrier networks, and engineers comparing national requirements with other regions, can use it to see what the national text expects of such systems.
