1 Scope

This document specifies the technical requirements, test methods and type identification for automotive door handles.

This document applies to the door handles of vehicles of categories M1 and N1 and of multipurpose goods vehicles; the door handles of other vehicles may refer to it.

2 Normative references

The contents of the following documents constitute indispensable provisions of this document through normative references in the text. For dated references, only the edition corresponding to that date applies to this document. For undated references, the latest edition (including all amendments) applies to this document.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB 11551, GB 15086 and GB 38031 and the following apply.

3.1 door: a hinged or sliding door on the side or rear of the vehicle, opened and closed to let occupants in and out. Note: folding doors, roller doors and simple doors that are easy to fit and remove are excluded. [Source: GB 15086-2013, 2.1, modified]

3.2 door handle: the operating mechanism for opening and closing the door. Note: only the outer door handle and the inner door handle.

3.3 unlatch: the release of the door lock from the fully latched or secondary latched position, separating the latch from the striker. Note 1: when the door lock is engaged it restrains the door, and the door can be opened by operating the door handle. Note 2: unlatching is either electrical, where the lock is released by an electrically driven mechanism, or mechanical, where it is released by a mechanical mechanism only.

3.4 outer door handle: a handle-like operating mechanism near the door or door frame for unlatching the door lock from outside the vehicle. Note: according to its connection to the door lock, it is either an electrically unlatched or a mechanically unlatched outer door handle.

3.5 inner door handle: an operating mechanism near the door or door frame for unlatching the door lock from inside the vehicle. Note: according to its connection to the door lock, it is either an electrically unlatched inner door handle (including the electronic button type) or a mechanically unlatched inner door handle.

4.1 General requirements

4.1.1 Outer door handle

4.1.1.1 Every door (excluding the back door) shall be equipped with a mechanically released outer door handle. The safety design of the vehicle shall be such that, after an event such as the deployment of an irreversible restraint device or thermal propagation of the traction battery, the door can be opened by means of the mechanically released outer door handle without the use of tools. For vehicles equipped with an electronically controlled door locking device or an automatically activated door locking device, when the locking device is in the locked state and an event such as the deployment of an irreversible restraint device or thermal propagation of the traction battery occurs, it shall be possible to open the door by means of the mechanically released outer door handle without the use of tools.

4.1.1.2 The outer door handle shall be located within the shaded area specified in Annex A, or in the area of the door or near the door frame adjacent to that shaded area. The shaded area for translational (sliding) opening doors is shown in Figure A.1; the shaded area for upward-rotating opening doors is shown in Figure A.2; the shaded area for all other types of door is shown in Figure A.3.

4.1.1.3 In any state of the outer door handle, a hand operating space allowing the mechanical release function to be operated shall be available relative to the vehicle body surface. This operating space shall be able to accommodate the module shown in Figure 1.

4.1.3 Instructions for use

The vehicle product instruction manual shall include instructions for the use of the door handles, containing at least the following information:

b. instructions for the operation of the door handles under emergency conditions.

4.2 Special requirements

4.2.1 Performance requirements

4.2.1.1 For vehicles on which the door lock can be electrically released from outside the vehicle, the test shall be carried out in accordance with the method specified in 5.1 or 5.2. […]

5.1 Static test of the outer door handle

5.1.1 The vehicle shall include at least the outer door handle, the door lock, the locking device, the door lock controller, the associated wiring harness and the power supply, and these systems shall be capable of operating normally.

5.1.2 The vehicle shall be stationary, the door lock in the fully latched position, the locking device in the locked state, and the traction battery of the vehicle (if fitted) shall be disconnected.

b. simulated triggering (by input signal or other means).

5.1.4 Taking the moment at which the deployment threshold of the vehicle's irreversible restraint device is reached as the start time, at 70 ms ± 5 ms the battery supplying the low-voltage auxiliary systems shall be disconnected. If the vehicle is fitted with several batteries located in different areas (e.g. engine compartment, passenger compartment, luggage compartment) supplying the door lock system, one of them shall be disconnected.

5.1.5 After 1 min, the other batteries supplying the vehicle's low-voltage auxiliary systems shall be disconnected, the mechanically released outer door handle shall be operated and the door opening condition checked; after 5 min, the mechanically released outer door handle shall be operated again and the door opening condition checked.

5.3 Test of the inner door handle

5.3.1 The vehicle shall include at least the inner door handle, the door lock, the locking device, the door lock controller, the associated wiring harness and the power supply, and these systems shall be capable of operating normally. 5.3. […]

5.3.4 The door opening condition shall be checked.

5.4 Door handle strength test

5.4.1 Strength test of the outer door handle

5.4.1.1 The outer door handle shall be opened to its limit position. The loading direction shall be within 0° ± 5° of the tangential direction of the motion trajectory of the outer door handle at the moment it reaches the limit position. A force of not less than 500 N shall be applied and maintained for at least 5 s.

5.4.2 Strength test of the inner door handle

5.4.2.1 The inner door handle (excluding the electronic push-button type inner door handle) shall be opened to its limit position. […]

Annex A Layout position of door handles

The layout positions of door handles are shown in Figure A.1 to Figure A.4.

Annex B Loading positions for the door handle strength test

The loading positions for the door handle strength test are shown in Figure B.1 to Figure B.5.
