GB 34464-2017 specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules, labelling, packaging, transport, storage and shelf life of the feed additive menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite (C11H10O5S · C6H8N2O, relative molecular mass 378.40), and applies to the product made by chemical synthesis.

The product is a white or almost white crystalline powder that must contain at least 44.0% menadione and at least 96.7% menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite, melt at 192 °C to 196 °C and give no precipitate in the menadione sulfonate test, with loss on drying of not more than 1.0%, residue on ignition not more than 0.5%, chromium not more than 30 mg/kg, heavy metals (as Pb) not more than 10 mg/kg and total arsenic not more than 2 mg/kg.

The test methods include chemical identification, an HPLC check of the two components on a Hilic column, content determination after alkaline precipitation and chloroform extraction of menadione by HPLC (reference method) or UV-visible spectrophotometry at 250 nm, melting point by the capillary method, residue on ignition at 550 °C, chromium by flame atomic absorption and a thioacetamide method for heavy metals.
