Scope
GB 31224-2014 is the English-translated version of 气象探测环境保护规范 大气本底站.
GB 31224-2014 specifies the grading, extent and protection requirements of the zones that protect the observing environment of atmosphere background stations, which make long-term observations of atmospheric composition on a global or regional scale, and of other stations with an atmosphere background observation function.
It defines the atmosphere background, background and global background watch stations, the edge of the observation site and the background sector, and divides the surroundings into three grades: a core protection zone within 1 000 m, a basic protection zone from 1 000 m to 10 000 m and a peripheral protection zone from 10 000 m to 30 000 m, extended for global stations to 50 000 m in the direction of the background sector.
Across all zones new or expanded heavy industrial and mining areas, towns and residential areas and fixed air routes overhead are prohibited; land-use change is limited to less than 1% of the area per year in the peripheral zone and 0.5% in the basic zone, where livestock farms, refuse dumps and sewage outfalls are also banned, while in the core zone land use must remain unchanged and railways, provincial and higher roads and unrelated buildings are excluded.
Annex A gives the method for delimiting the background sector from wind direction frequency roses, wind direction-concentration roses and back-trajectories, using a 60% cumulative frequency threshold and ±11.25° sector widths.
Clause 3.2.1.2 and Annex A are recommended and the remainder is mandatory. It is a first edition, issued on 30 September 2014 and in force since 1 January 2015.
