Foreword

This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part

1.Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents". Drafting. This document replaces GB 20557-2006 "Frozen Goat Semen". Compared with GB 20557-2006, the main differences are structural adjustments and editorial changes. In addition, the main technological changes are as follows:

---The scope of application has been changed (see Chapter 1, Chapter 1 of the.2006 edition);

---Added the terms and definitions for "abnormal sperm" and "batch" (see 3.5, 3.8);

---The definitions of "progressive motility sperm count" and "total bacterial count" have been revised (see 3.3, 3.7, and

3.4 in the.2006 edition);

---The requirements for "breeding rams," "fresh semen," "frozen semen appearance," and "granules" have been removed (see sections 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and

4.3.2 of the.2006 edition);

---A dosage requirement has been added (see Chapter 4);

---The requirements for "sperm motility" and "progressive motility" have been changed (see Chapter 4,

4.4 of the.2006 edition);

---The "sampling" requirements have been changed (see Chapter 5, Chapter 5 of the.2006 edition, and Appendix B);

---The "Test Methods" have been changed (see Chapter 6, Chapter 6 of the.2006 edition);

---The "Test Type" (see 7.1,

1 Scope

GB 20557-2025 is the Chinese national standard covering frozen ram and buck semen - the health status of the donor, the collection and dilution, the freezing and the straw, the motility and morphology after thawing, and the labelling and traceability of a straw that will produce a lamb. A mandatory standard: this is genetic material moving between flocks, and with it disease. It replaces GB 20557-2006 and takes effect on 1 January 2027. It was issued on 31 December 2025 and takes effect on 1 January 2027, replacing GB 20557-2006. The document is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. This page is published from the official record of the 2025 edition; the clause text of a standard this recent is not yet in circulation, and the figures, limits and tables it contains are those of the document itself, delivered in full with the English translation.

This document specifies the technical requirements, sampling, inspection rules, labeling and accompanying documentation, packaging, storage, transportation, and non-compliance of frozen sheep semen. Product handling and testing methods are described. This document applies to frozen semen products from sheep and goats.

3 Terms and Definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 semen The sperm suspension that male animals expel from the urethra during ejaculation.

3.2 Frozen semen Semen that has been processed using special methods, cryopreserved at ultra-low temperatures, and then stored in liquid nitrogen.
