Scope

GB 19377-2003 is the English-translated version of 天然草地退化、沙化、盐渍化的分级指标.

GB 19377-2003 specifies the grades and grading indicators for the degradation, sandification and salification of natural rangelands, and applies to classifying rangeland into non-affected, light, moderate and severe grades for each of the three processes.

It defines the terms used - rangeland degradation, sandification and salification, plant indicator, dominant species, summed dominance ratio (SDR), above-ground plant mass, soil bulk density and soil erosion index - and gives three tables of indicators expressed as relative percentage changes against a non-degraded baseline: cover, sward height, dominance and numbers of edible, inedible and indicator species, forage yield, soil organic matter and total nitrogen in the 0 cm to 20 cm layer, drifting and bare sand, erosion, rodent burrows, particle-size composition, soil salt content, pH, phreatic water level and groundwater mineralisation, divided into mandatory and auxiliary monitoring items.

The assessment rules grade a rangeland when more than 50 % of the mandatory indicators reach a grade, clear it when more than 70 % do not, and use the auxiliary indicators when 30 % to 50 % are reached; light sandification or salification counts as moderate degradation and moderate or severe as severe degradation.

The baseline is taken from nature reserves with the same hydrothermal conditions or from the first national rangeland survey of the 1980s. All technical contents are mandatory.

It is a first edition, issued on 10 November 2003 and implemented on 1 April 2004. Classification: ICS 13.080.99, CCS B11. The document runs to 8 pages, delivered complete in English translation.
