GB 1903.76-2025 is a mandatory national food safety standard for heme iron as a nutritional fortifier. Iron deficiency remains the most widespread nutritional deficiency in the world, and the ordinary answer to it - iron salts such as ferrous sulfate - works poorly for two reasons: only a small fraction is absorbed, and much of it is inhibited by phytates and polyphenols in the same meal, while the unabsorbed remainder causes the gastrointestinal effects that make people stop taking it. Heme iron is the form found in meat, absorbed by a different pathway that bypasses those inhibitors, so far less is needed for the same effect. It is made from animal blood, which is precisely why it needs a mandatory standard: the raw material is a slaughterhouse by-product, and its safety depends on inspection, quarantine and the processing that follows. This standard applies to heme iron as a food nutrition fortifier, prepared from inspected and quarantined animal blood, or from blood cells separated by centrifugation, through enzymatic hydrolysis, separation and the associated processes. It is the reference for fortifier producers, food manufacturers and the food safety authorities.
