GB 14891.8-1997 is the Chinese mandatory hygienic standard for irradiated beans, cereals and their products, part of the GB 14891 series on irradiated foods.

It specifies the irradiation dose, the hygienic requirements and the test methods for these products when they are irradiated for insect disinfestation with Co-60 or Cs-137 gamma-rays or with electron beams below 10 MeV.

The average absorbed dose is limited to not more than 0.2 kGy for beans and 0.4 kGy to 0.6 kGy for cereals, with a dose uniformity ratio of not more than 1.5; the product must have the colour, odour and taste of normal grain, meet the physical and chemical indicators of GB 2715, and show no live insects or eggs during storage, while the smallest package must carry the irradiated food label and testing follows GB 5009.36.

It replaces ZB C 53005-84. Issued on 3 July 1997, in force since 1 January 1998. Classification: ICS 67.060, CCS C 53. The document runs to 3 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword

Irradiated beans, cereals and their products are beans, cereals and products thereof that have been treated, for the purpose of insect disinfestation, with gamma-rays produced by Co-60 or Cs-137, or with electron beams of less than 10 MeV produced by an electron accelerator.

This standard has been put forward on the basis of relevant domestic and foreign data and of the experimental results obtained by the School of Public Health of West China University of Medical Sciences and other units, and it replaces ZB C 53005-84.

This standard was first issued in June 1997.

This standard was proposed by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China.

This standard was drafted by the School of Public Health of West China University of Medical Sciences, the Sichuan Provincial Institute for Food Hygiene Supervision and Inspection, the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Nuclear Application Technology and the Chengdu Grain Storage Research Institute of the Ministry of Internal Trade.

Main drafters of this standard: Wang Ruishu, Yang Zhongya, Chen Qixun, Shi Hailin, Chen Lihua.

This standard is interpreted by the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, the technical focal unit entrusted by the Ministry of Health.
