Scope
GB 12379-1990 is the English-translated version of 环境核辐射监测规定.
GB 12379-1990 lays down the general principles for environmental nuclear radiation monitoring and applies to all such monitoring carried out in China, by nuclear facilities, units applying radioactive isotopes and the environmental protection authorities alike.
It defines the key terms (source unit, nuclear facility, environmental background survey, routine and supervisory monitoring, quality assurance and control, representative sample, accuracy, precision) and sets out the monitoring bodies that source units and provincial environmental protection departments must establish and their duties.
It specifies how monitoring programmes are drawn up, including a pre-operational background survey of at least two consecutive years and, for large nuclear facilities, environmental parameters surveyed out to 80 km, and gives rules for in-situ measurement and for the collection of air, deposition, water, bottom sediment, soil and biological samples.
Further clauses cover radiochemical analysis and radioactivity measurement in the laboratory, statistical treatment of data, evaluation and reporting of monitoring results and quality assurance, with reference annexes on minimum detectable limits and the trimmed mean.
