Vocabulary of graphic symbols for electrical equipment

1 Scope

GB/Z 43345-2023 collects the vocabulary used to talk about graphical symbols on electrical equipment. It is a vocabulary about symbols rather than a set of symbols, and the distinction is what makes it necessary: the symbols themselves are standardised in large registered collections, but the words used to describe, classify and specify them — what counts as a symbol element, what an application is, how a variant differs from a distinct symbol, what an original is against a reproduction — have been used differently by IEC, ISO and ITU and in national standards. Since a product standard specifies a symbol by referring to it in these terms, an inconsistency here becomes an ambiguity about what must be marked on equipment. This document defines the terminology of the field of graphical symbols for equipment as used in IEC, ISO, ITU and national standard publications, bringing them together as a glossary, with some terms annotated or modified for clarity. As a GB/Z it is a guiding technical document. Under ICS 01.080.40 and CCS K04, it is written for the technical committees that draft symbol and product standards, for equipment manufacturers marking their products, and for the certification bodies checking that marking.

This document defines the terminology in the field of graphical symbols for equipment and related fields in IEC , ISO and ITU and national standard publications.
