The document is a terminology standard for the engineering works of the shipbuilding industry rather than for ships themselves: the yard, the docks, the berths, the test facilities, the maritime works and the special equipment that a shipyard is built from, together with the building and repair processes those facilities serve.

1 Scope

GB/T 51470-2025 is the Chinese terminology standard for shipbuilding industry engineering. China builds more than half the world's tonnage, and a shipyard is itself a major engineering work: dry docks and building docks, slipways and berths, quay walls and outfitting quays, gantry cranes and transfer systems, the test facilities from the towing tank to the engine test bed, and the maritime works that hold all of it against the sea. This standard fixes the vocabulary of that: the basic terms; the building and repair processes for ships and marine engineering equipment; the test facilities; the maritime engineering works; the special equipment used for building and repairing; and other works, closing with an index. It is the terminology the design, tender and approval documents for a Chinese shipyard project are written in. For a yard operator, a design institute, an equipment supplier or a translator working on Chinese shipyard documentation, this is the reference vocabulary.
