This document was issued on 12 March 2024 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the PRC and the State Administration for Market Regulation and takes effect on 1 August 2024.

It was prepared under the 2019 engineering construction standards work plan of MOHURD, drawing on international and foreign advanced standards, and it closes with a Chinese and an English index of every term it defines.

1 Scope

GB/T 51458-2024 is the Chinese terminology standard for meteorological facilities engineering, and it is the reference that makes the vocabulary of the Chinese meteorological infrastructure programme readable. China operates one of the densest observing networks in the world, together with its own meteorological satellites, radar network, weather modification programme and lightning protection testing system, and the engineering terms for all of it are set here. The standard covers the general terms, then the integrated meteorological observation project, divided into space-based, air-based and ground-based observation and the support facilities for observation equipment, the ground-based section alone running to fourteen pages; then the meteorological information transmission facilities, covering the information network, the distribution and dissemination engineering and the operation and maintenance guarantee engineering; then the meteorological forecast and prediction project; then the meteorological service project, covering weather modification operations, lightning protection system engineering and lightning protection product testing; and finally the meteorological science research and the publicity and education projects. Chinese and English indexes close the document. It applies to the design, construction acceptance and operational management of meteorological facilities engineering.
