It is relevant wherever stock must be observed continuously, for example to keep track of its condition and location, and it gives developers and operators a common technical reference rather than leaving each system to its own conventions.

The likely audience includes warehouse and logistics operators, suppliers of monitoring hardware and software, system integrators, and the auditors or customers who need to judge whether a monitoring system meets expectations.
