Its terms include safe working load, and it also has classification and size clauses. Issued on 25 May 2026 and applicable from 1 September 2026.

This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents".

This document is equivalent to ISO 23116:2020 "Ships and marine technology - Ship mooring and towing equipment - Panama - Guide hole base".

1 Scope

This document specifies the type, nominal dimensions, materials, and structure of Panama Canal guide rail bases used for guiding ship mooring and towing cables.

Construction, manufacturing, and marking requirements.

This document applies to vessels that generally use steel tow cable tractors and/or tugboats to assist in the transit of the Panama Canal.

Design and manufacture of cable guide base. The cable guide base meets both conventional mooring requirements and the requirements of the Panama Canal.

Note: Panamax and New Panamax vessels' Panamax guide port base (SWL90t) can be replaced by a closed guide port base (see ISO 23113).

3 Terms and Definitions

Safety load limits (maximum permissible load) for mooring and towing equipment.

4 Classification

4.1 Type

Panama cable guide bases should be classified into the following types according to the installation location.

a) Type A. Deck mounting Panama cable guide hole base;

b) Type B. Panama cable guide bases installed on the deck and sides;

c) Type C. Panama cable guide hole elbow plate installed on the bulwark.

4.2 Nominal Dimensions

The nominal size of the Panama cable guide hole base is expressed by the width of the cable guide hole, in millimeters (mm). The nominal sizes are 310 and 360.

The dimensions and parameters of the Panama cable guide hole base should be as per Tables 1-3 and Figures 1-3.
