Introduction

Photocatalytic activity (PCA) refers to the ability of a material to accelerate a specific photochemical reaction under specified conditions (see ISO 20507:2014, 2.3.31).

With the widespread application of nanomaterials, under illumination (including natural and artificial light), nanomaterials may cause chemical reactions and the production of harmful substances.

Increased activity could have impacts on human health and the environment. Nanomaterials, upon absorbing photons of sufficient energy, generate electron-hole pairs.

Some electrons and holes may migrate to the particle surface and react with water and oxygen to generate highly reactive free radicals and reactive oxygen species.

(ROS). Some wide bandgap materials, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), tungsten trioxide (WO3), cerium dioxide (CeO2), and carbon.

Nanotubes, quantum dots, and some metal nanoparticles generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) light irradiation, causing oxidative stress and impacting biological processes.

The material produces a toxic effect [5]. Therefore, measuring the PCA of nanomaterials under physiological conditions can be used to assess their phototoxicity.

Due to issues such as excessively large test volumes, excessively long measurement times, or the use of organic dyes with poor biocompatibility as reaction indicators, existing...

Standards for PCA measurement methods for particles and surfaces (see ISO 10676 and ISO 10678) cannot be directly applied to nanoparticles that may cause phototoxicity.

PCA measurement of rice material.

PCA testing of nanoparticles based on the oxidation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) aims to evaluate the performance of nanomaterials under ultraviolet light.

The ability to produce phototoxicity under light irradiation.
