Scope
GB/T 45622-2025 is the English-translated version of 海水淡化及综合利用术语.
GB/T 45622-2025 is the Chinese national standard covering the vocabulary of the seawater industry in one place — the basic terms of raw seawater, brackish water and desalination, the distillation and the membrane processes and the ones that fit neither, seawater cooling with its corrosion, fouling and algae control and its cooling towers, seawater piped into buildings and what is done to it before and after, the extraction of potassium, bromine, magnesium, iodine, lithium and uranium, and an index. The scope names economic and trade work and the translation of technical literature alongside research and design. First edition, under the Ministry of Natural Resources. In force from 1 December 2025. Issued on 30 May 2025, it has been in force since 1 December 2025.

Terminology of seawater desalination and comprehensive utilization
1 Scope
This document defines the basic terms of seawater desalination and comprehensive utilization, seawater desalination technology, seawater cooling technology, and large-scale life seawater technology.
Common terms and definitions of seawater chemical resource extraction and utilization technologies.
This document is applicable to the scientific research, management, design, production application, economic and trade, technical document formulation, book and periodical editing in the field of seawater desalination and comprehensive utilization.

3 Basic terminology
3.1 raw seawater rawseawater
Untreated seawater.
[Source. HY/T 203.1-2016, 2.1]
3.2 Brackish water
Water with a total salt content higher than 1000 mg/L and lower than the total salt content of original seawater.
Note. The total salt content is generally between 1000mg/L and 10000mg/L.
3.3 Desalination
The process of removing part or most of the salt from seawater or brackish water to obtain fresh water.
3.4 seawater multi-purpose utilization
Technologies and processes for effectively utilizing seawater as a resource in various ways.
Note. Comprehensive utilization of seawater mainly refers to seawater cooling, large-scale domestic use of seawater, extraction and utilization of seawater chemical resources, and other technologies and processes for utilizing seawater resources.
Processes, excluding seawater desalination, salt pan salt production and marine aquaculture.
3.5
Research and development, production and service activities for seawater desalination, seawater cooling, large-scale domestic seawater use, and seawater chemical resource utilization.
3.6 waterintake
The process of obtaining raw seawater or brackish water from the source.
3.7 Pretreatment
The process of removing particles of mud, sand, colloids, microorganisms and other substances from the original seawater (brackish water) before the desalination and deionization process.
Note. Pretreatment generally includes sterilization, coagulation, sedimentation, flotation, filtration and other processes.
