Introduction
Effective communication between organizations and the public is an important aspect of emergency management. Social media has become a vital part of traditional media such as television, radio, and newspapers.
In fact, it provides more communication options and enhances communication capabilities, but it also makes communication more challenging.
It is important that organizations recognize the potential benefits and risks inherent in using social media in their communications strategies, including crisis communications.
Social media can improve situational awareness and communication capabilities, and can promote mutual support among the public during emergencies or crises.
The media may also spread inaccurate information about an event and the response to it.
Organizations that monitor can take advantage of the potential benefits of social media and offset the potential negative effects that social media may have.
This document provides guidance on how to incorporate social media as a means of communication in emergency management.
