1 Scope

GB/T 45363-2025 is the Chinese terminology standard for writing instruments. China makes the great majority of the world's pens, and a terminology standard in that position does real commercial work: it fixes what a gel pen, a rollerball, a ballpoint, a marker, a fountain pen, a mechanical pencil and each of their components are called, so that a specification written in one country and a factory in another mean the same thing. The document defines the terms for the product types, for the parts, the refill, the tip, the ball, the barrel, the cap, the ink and the ink follower, for the properties that are specified and tested, and for the defects that are argued about. It is the reference the other pen standards, on writing performance, on cap safety and on the migration of elements, all build on. For a brand sourcing from China, a factory writing a specification or a laboratory testing a consignment, this is the shared vocabulary.

This document defines the terms and definitions for pen products. This document is suitable for pen-making professionals to formulate standards, compile technical documents, and write professional manuals, teaching materials, and books and periodicals.

3 General terms

3.1 Pen A writing tool with an ink supply system that can form lines on the writing surface. [Source: GB/T 41440-2022, 3.1.1]

3.2 writing medium A substance containing coloring material that can form lines on the writing surface.

Note. Including ink, printing ink, lead, etc.

3.3 writing front-end The front end of a writing tool is a general term for the writing part.

Note. Includes fountain pen tips, ballpoint pen tips, marker pen tips and lead cores, etc.

3.4 Fixed type The writing end (3.3) is of non-retractable structural form.

3.5 movable type The writing end (3.3) has a retractable structure.

3.5.1 Push type A structural form in which a writing end (3.3) is controlled to extend or retract into the front end of a writing tool through a pressing action.

Note. According to the pressing method, it can be divided into head pressing type, sleeve pressing type and side pressing type.

3.5.2 Rotary screwtype A structural form in which a writing end (3.3) is controlled to extend out or retract into the front end of a writing tool through a rotating action.

3.6 Reservoir type A structural form that stores ink in a fiber water storage core.
