1 Scope

GB/T 44277-2024 specifies the character table that a Chinese domain name is registered against, and the rules for using it. The problem it solves is particular to Chinese and unavoidable: the same word can be written in simplified or traditional characters, many characters have variant forms, and a naive registration system would let one party register the simplified form of a name and another the traditional form, producing two domains that read identically to a user and belong to different people. The registration table and the variant rules in this document are what prevent that. The document specifies the registration character table itself, carried in two normative annexes of more than 870 pages, one with the recommended characters in simplified form and one in traditional form, and it specifies the rules and the method by which a registry applies the table when a name is registered, including the generation and the disposition of the variant set of a requested label. For a domain registry, a registrar, a brand protection service or anyone operating in the Chinese internationalised domain name space, this is the authoritative table.

This document specifies the registration word list to be referred to when registering Chinese domain names and the corresponding usage of the word list.
