1 Scope

GB/T 43044-2023 sets out how a digital camera's specifications should be defined, measured and stated. Camera specifications are the part of consumer electronics marketing where honest and misleading numbers are hardest for a buyer to tell apart: sensor size quoted in fractional-inch conventions that correspond to nothing physical, resolution counted before or after cropping, zoom that combines optical with digital, ISO sensitivity derived by different definitions, and battery life measured under conditions each manufacturer chooses. Each figure is defensible in isolation and the set is not comparable across brands. This document describes a set of characteristics of a digital still camera together with their definitions, the test methods for determining them and the way they are to be represented, so that a published specification means the same thing whoever published it. It applies to digital cameras designed and produced for ordinary consumers, excluding those built to special specifications. Under ICS 37.040.10 and CCS N46, it is written for camera manufacturers and their marketing and technical documentation functions, for retailers and comparison services, and for the consumer protection bodies that examine advertised claims.
