Scope
GB/T 42557-2023 is the English-translated version of 射电望远镜电磁环境保护技术规范.
GB/T 42557-2023 protects radio telescopes from the rest of us. A radio telescope detects signals many orders of magnitude weaker than any transmitter a person carries, which makes it the most sensitive receiver in any landscape and the one most easily blinded: a mobile phone, a poorly shielded switching power supply, a passing vehicle's ignition, or a satellite downlink in an adjacent band can wipe out an observation that cannot be repeated. Protecting an observatory therefore means measuring the electromagnetic environment before the site is chosen, and controlling what is allowed to be built and operated around it afterwards. This document specifies the requirements for protecting the electromagnetic environment of radio telescopes and describes the methods for measuring the electromagnetic environment at radio astronomy ground observation stations. It applies to electromagnetic environment measurement during site selection, construction and operation. Under ICS 07.040 and CCS M35, it is written for observatory operators, for the radio regulators who set and enforce quiet zones, and for the planning authorities and network operators whose decisions determine whether an observatory can keep working.
