GB/T 42193.2-2022 is the vocabulary part of the seven-part GB/T 42193 series on communication between a road vehicle and external equipment for emissions-related diagnostics. It gives the terms, definitions, abbreviations and acronyms used across the series, explains how they are meant to be used, and lays down naming rules, including a procedure for constructing a new term so that later additions stay consistent with the ones already in circulation. A general information clause records the kinds of shop-floor usage that do not meet those rules, such as abbreviations that do not logically follow from the term and abbreviations formed at the level of a single morpheme, and a document overview clause maps the other parts of the series. Diagnostic communication fails on vocabulary more often than on protocol. A scan tool, an engine control unit and a service manual written by three different organisations have to mean the same thing by the same abbreviation, and the technician reading a fault description has to recognise it without a lookup table. When each supplier coins its own wording, the data is transmitted correctly and understood wrongly. Vehicle and control unit manufacturers, scan tool developers and technical writers preparing service documentation use it alongside the other parts, with terms drawn from ISO 15031-5 and ISO 15031-6.

4 General information
Some commonly used terms understood by manufacturers and technicians may not strictly meet the requirements of this document, including the following three types of terms.
a) Abbreviations that do not logically fit the term.
b) Abbreviations at the morpheme level, that is, the term includes a further defined base word or noun used to describe common things.
c) Abbreviations that contain basic vocabulary items, but are often used as modifiers of other basic vocabulary. due to abbreviation one
