Scope

GB/T 41032-2021 is the English-translated version of 宇航用元器件结构分析通用指南.

China's national general guidelines for construction analysis of components used in space. Construction analysis is the destructive examination of a sample of a component to establish how it was actually built: the device is sectioned, decapsulated, photographed at each layer and analysed, and what is found is compared with what the manufacturer said. It is done because a space programme cannot rely on a datasheet alone for a part that will be unreachable for fifteen years. The findings that matter are the ones nobody declares - a die that has been shrunk to a new process, a change of wire bond metallurgy, a passivation layer thinner than specified, a mould compound reformulated for cost. Any of those can change the radiation tolerance or the lifetime of a part that is nominally the same as the one qualified years earlier. For components not made to space grades, which is increasingly what small satellites use, it is the only way to know what is in them.
