This document is Part 5-3 of the series on electrostatics and concerns the protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena, specifically the classification of properties and requirements for packaging intended for electrostatic discharge sensitive devices.
Packaging manufacturers, electronics makers, contract assemblers and logistics providers can use it to describe and select protective packaging in consistent terms. ESD control coordinators and testing laboratories may also refer to it when auditing or verifying packaging. The standard is a recommended national standard and adopts an international standard. It was issued on 28 August 2026 and takes effect on 1 December 2026. A classification scheme lets a buyer name the level of protection needed in a purchase order without describing each material in detail.
